The Olympic games has been postponed to the summer of 2021 due to the fast spreading coronavirus pandemic.
The decision was made after an agreement was reached between the IOC Chief, Thomas Bach and the Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe. The prime minister disclosed that the most appropriate response to the pandemic was postponement and cancellation was out of the picture.
He said, " We agreed that a postponement would be the best way to ensure that the athletes are in peak condition when they compete and to guarantee the safety of the spectators."
He also said that the olympic flame will remain in the country as a beacon of hope to the world.
The rescheduling of the games will surely deal a great blow to the country which have already spent $12bn on the postponed event and huge sums are also at stake for sponsors and broadcasters that had purchased viewing rights.
