Following the death of Abba Kyari, the fomer Chief of Staff, whose death trended for two weeks, the position was left vacant as Nigerians patiently awaited the new appointment. On Wednesday, the 13th of May, the secretary to the Federal Government, Boss Mustapha, announced that the President had appointed Professor Ibrahim Gambari as the successor to Abba Kyari.
Many criticized the choice. Others supported the President. It is important to illuminate the general public on the qualities of the new Chief of Staff and let you the reader decide if this apointment is in their best interest as citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Ibrahim Gambari was born 1944 in Ilorin,Kwara State and he attended King's College,Lagos before proceeding to the London School of Economics and Colombia University to get his BSc, Masters and PhD degrees respectively. He taught In Ahmadu Bello University,Kaduna and was the first Chancellor of Kwara State University in 2013.
He was the first UN UNDER-SECRETARY and Special Advisor to the Secretary General on Africa. He was first the Minister of External Affairs before becoming the Ambassador of Nigeria to the UN. He has headed missions in UNICEF and UNAMID and was given the highest honour for a non-citizen in South Africa by Pres. Jacob Zuma.
Nigerian Foreign relations Association Ambassador,Gani Lawal, described Prof Gambari as "loyal" and a "workaholic" stating that he will deliver in his fullest capacity. It is salient to note, that not only is the new COS a well-versed diplomat, but a loyal man to the core. When the regime of Pres Muhammadu Buhari was cut short by Ibrahim Babangida,Gambari refused to work for Babangida and left his elated office! He was then the foreign Minister under Buhari.
Nigerians in entirety hope that the new Chief of Staff will help the President make informed choices that will move the country forward.
