On April the 8th,approximately a month ago, there was a controversial contingent of 15 Chinese doctors arrived Nigeria in a bid to assist the Nigerian Medical Association in the fight against COVID19. Their arrival stirred an Unrest amongst Nigerians who called for their immediate returns to China. However these medical practitioners have gone the standard 14-day Isolation test and have been confirmed free of the virus.
After such a long while,Nigerians curiously laid down the question about where these doctors were and how they'd help with reduction of the spread of the pandemic. The answer to the question was graciously provided by The Honorable Minister of Health on the 14th May while conducting the daily briefing on the containment of COVID19 by the Presidential Task force (PTF) in Abuja.
When the question was 'popped', the Minister said 'I want to explain first of all that I think not all of them are technicians, but they are staff of the CCECC,the Ministry of Health is NOT their host,so we can't always explain what happened to them or where they are'. He continued in his explanation saying 'There seems to be lots of interest in these doctors but they are staff of a company and I think they are on company visa'.
The Minister furthermore postulated that they (the doctors)had taught Nigeria some things from their experience in their country and they had shared ideas about what steps they took in managing COVID19.Apart from information sharing, the Chinese Medical team on their arrival at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport arrived with $1.5 million worth of equipment to assist the Nigerian government.
Whether or not the Nigerian Medical Association and the Ministry of Health will fully co-pperate with these doctors is yet to be known, and as this scenario is,the doctors need to 'resurface' first, before any true work can be done.
